The Better Futures programme has been going for over seven years and in that time we have built an ecosystem of trusted experts and partners.
It has been home to 14 Nobel Prize winners and has a long history of technical innovation, starting with the creation of the first organic chemical dyes and more recently the development of robotic surgery. At Imperial the Better Futures led by the Centre for Climate Change Innovation (CCI) at the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment. The CCCI was created to support the development of a new economy, based on low-carbon and resilient businesses. It has so far supported the creation of 95 new Cleantech businesses, helping them to raise $1/4bn in funds, as well as working with established businesses, helping them to build a low-carbon future. They are using the investment in rail infrastructure projects High Speed 2 (HS2) and the Elizabeth Line (formally known as Crossrail) to create new opportunities for people in the area. The Corporation was officially launched on 1 April 2015 by the Mayor of London. OPDC is the Local Planning Authority and regeneration agency for the 650 hectare site. They provide flexible workspaces and prototyping workshops for startups developing new technology in sustainability. The organisation hosts events and community activities to help sustainable startups develop their products and services, grow their market, raise funding and build teams. Sustainable Workspaces (assisted by Sustainable Ventures) provides tailored innovation and business support to London based low-carbon SMEs. To date, a wide range of support has been provided to SMEs including support with developing business plans, fundraising strategies, investment readiness, product development and scaling and access to markets, among others.
